Last summer I had the pleasure of meeting Chitra Gopalakrishnan, one of the founders of Kara Weaves. Her company was established to give impetus to the struggling handloom industry in the state of Kerala, India, and to promote the cultural heritage of the traditional cotton fabric. It was a fortuitous meeting, as I now find myself in their beautiful state inspired by the incredible sites surrounding the area. 
Kara Weaves promotes the sustainable development of these weaving cooperatives. Environmentally friendly handlooms reduce the negative impact on ecology and the environment.
The gossamer thin cotton threads produce a finely woven textile with a wonderful hand.
Chitra’s graphic design background is expanding the company’s color palate and design offerings with an ever growing collection of prints using environmentally friendly water based inks.
The candy colored towels derive their name KARA from the traditional thin stripe border. They are a favorite among some of the best eco-friendly hotels in the area.
