As part of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) an enormous outdoor installation of fish was constructed using discarded clear plastic bottles on Botafogo beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The sculptures are illuminated with LED's from the inside at night creating a pretty spectacular light show. With the beautiful backdrop of Rio's mountains, the sculptures represent what a blight plastic could be in this beautiful setting if not handled properly.
In addition to providing an unexpected installation on the beach, the sculptures are symbolic of our over consumption of plastic and the danger it represents to our Eco- system. Marine life is especially at risk when these bottles end up being discarded rather that recycled. The massive interactive artwork gives the viewer some scale of the world wide problem. The conference might have ended yesterday, but the images of the sculptures will remain as a continuing reminder of the long life of plastic in the environment.
