Great Joys of Summer-OutdoorShowers

Outdoor showers are one of the great joys in life. I pride myself on the fact that I've never taken a shower indoors at our summer place. Come spring and fall, that can lead to a few frigid experiences, but nothing can replace the invigorating feeling of a shower under the stars or in the cool weather with the steam rising all around you.

Just like everything else in life, there are ways to make your water experience more environmentally friendly. Did you know that in the next 5 years, it is expected that at least 36 states will experience water shortages? I hate to be a spoilsport, but while you luxuriate in the photos below, think about the fact that the average shower uses 5+ gallons of water a minute.

You can still have a beautifully designed space, but first and foremost, consider installing a high efficiency shower head. Enjoy the same water pressure, while at the same time cutting your use to 2.5 gallons per minute{ in some cases over 50%}. This is the solution that will have the biggest impact.

If you need a mat, teak resists mold and mildew. Just make sure its sustainably grown and harvested. Consider installing a timer and limiting your shower to five minutes. These folks might need a lesson...

While an outdoor shower puts less strain on the sewer system, keep in mind that the products you are using might be leeching into your well water. There are many soaps and shampoos available today with a balanced ph that are natural and bio-degradable. Dr. Bronner's is a personal favorite of mine that I've been using since girl scout days. It's good for everything from washing your clothes to brushing your teeth, is fare trade and the company has been in business for decades.

Lather up with your significant other or take a Navy shower. Originally used to conserve water on ships, they are a great means to an end. Get your body wet, turn off the water, lather up and then rinse. This is especially effective for renters who want to conserve but don't want to go to any expense in a spot you are just in temporarily.

Put containers or a watering can in the space to capture grey water, use it to water your window boxes and potted plants.

Not too painful to make your experience a bit more Eco-savvy, right! Are we sufficiently refreshed yet?
