Container houses and recycled use of containers are getting a lot of ink these days. Considering one of your own? The Quik House designed by New Jersey based architect Adam Kalkin has a six month waiting list.
The completed house, based on the design of a shipping container, is about 75% recycled materials by weight. Standard models offer 2000 sq ft. Three bedrooms and two and a half baths. Assembly of the shell can be completed in just 24 hours, and the nuts and bolts of the interior take about an additional 3 months. Upgrades such as solar panels, wind turbines, a green roof and additional insulation can further the green quotient of the house. Best of all, the estimated cost, including assembly and shipping comes in at around $184,000. I could definately see myself downsizing into one of these! If only.......
