It takes some talent to decorate an outdoor space and turn it into an extension of your house with a limited budget. Liz Dougherty has done just that with her recently rebuilt deck in New England. Look no further for inspiration to liven up your summer space and start entertaining!
Reduce, re-use, recycle. It was important for Liz to recycle any of the wood from the old deck. Working with a creative builder, she designed cabinets and tables to make good use of the lumber from parts of the flooring. They also decoratively repurposed the structure for hanging burlap coffee bags framed to give more privacy to the space {they were a Nantucket dump find}. And when it comes to plants: more is never enough.
Warm weather entertaining calls for lots of comfortable seating. Turning curbside trash to treasure, she scored a wicker couch and recovered the cushions with remnants she had on hand.
Liz enjoys collecting treasures at the shore when she travels with her husband. Each corner has memories gathered from beaches on the east coast. This driftwood sculpture was a DIY project completed this year for the new space.
The beautiful patina on these flowers comes courtesy of the ocean. Liz found the whole lot of them on a Block Island beach. She says large debris often washes up, "you never know what treasures will be there."
The successful styling of this comfy space is a recyclers dream. Using flea market finds, found objects and many curbside pickups, Liz has turned this backyard deck into a dream space for entertaining and relaxing with friends, proving a limited budget doesn't have to limit your creativity.
